School Construction

Since the devastating earthquake of January 2010, we have been reconstructing or repairing the 60% of our schools that were either damaged or completely destroyed. Our budget is very limited to donations received and it just barely covers the salaries of our teachers and administrators. As a result, many of our schools are in sad shape and in some cases, our students must meet under tarps or in cobbled-together huts made of sticks and leaves.

Those salaries are always the most important part of what we do, as schools without teachers are just, well, empty buildings. However, some of our generous donors are interested in further involvement in our work beyond the money they send to the teachers, and we are particularly grateful when they choose to tackle a construction project. In the photos above, you can see the progression of a little school hut transformed into a hurricane-and-earthquake-resistant nine-room school building. We hope to find the sponsors to rebuild between two and four schools per year in this manner. As a result, we will continue to feature one school for focus. We can build a high-quality school like the one shown here, fir about $10,000 per room, which is a fraction of the cost of construction in the First World. If you are interested in contributing to these projects, we will keep a space available on our donor page that allows for that.

Our current focus: St André, Cavanack

Our little school in the remote village of Cavanack urgently needs a new school. With under 100 students, it doesn't require the amount of space as other schools but still needs eight rooms, which is space enough for two levels of preschool and grades 1-6, plus the principal's office. You can see from our photo how far we need to come. But before we can start, we need to assemble $80,000. Can you help us build the new St André Primary School?
